TRANSLATION:
The experienced translator renders an original document into a second language. To generate the best quality translations, the translator is a native speaker of the target language and fluent in the source language. The translator is custom selected for each project because of her background knowledge in the specific subject matter at hand.
EDITING:
The editor reviews the translation and the source document to compare the tenor and content of both languages and to correct the writing style of the translation to suit normal patterns in the target language and maintain the integrity of the original message. The editor also checks for missing words or phrases, mistranslations, and grammatical errors.
GRAPHIC DESIGN:
The dual purposes are to establish a high-quality, print- or Web- ready artwork for the customer and to give the translation the same polished look as the original files. This usually includes integrating the translation into the original design layout and re-formatting as necessary to accommodate the longer translated text and to update tables of contents or indices. There is no charge for standard layout work in MS Word. Our graphic designers have formal training on using specialty graphics software like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Freehand, and Photoshop, as well as print pre-press and Web design. If any graphics or captions contain text, we translate the text and rebuild the relevant layers of those images using advanced graphics software. In the case where the original document cannot be edited (i.e., a PDF or a hardcopy), the graphic designer must attempt to recreate the document from scratch. This means creating a master page template in InDesign and attempting to match the color choices, fonts, text flow, and graphics elements.
PROOFREADING:
Proofreading of the translated document by a translator, who is a native speaker of the target language. He particularly focuses on the overall writing style and the editor's feedback and discusses changes with the rest of the translation team and project manager until all are satisfied with the final document. The overall goal is to ensure the accuracy of linguistic and grammatical elements, correct hyphenation and word placement, and proper publication-ready formatting.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
The Project Manager gathers requirements from Customer, custom-matches and schedules the translation team, addresses accounting matters, helps field questions from Customer and translation team, assists with terminology research, and reviews the completed translation to check for completeness and compliance with any special instructions.
TERMINOLOGY MANAGEMENT:
A bilingual language professional is assigned to create a unique terminology glossary or translation memory* for the client to ensure that translator(s) use consistent wording across multiple projects or multiple languages for the same client. This entails researching, defining, and translating your proprietary, technical, or industry-specific terms to ensure consistency throughout all of your projects, as well as maintaining and updating an electronic database of these terms. (*A glossary is a bilingual list of terms; a memory is a database of previously translated sentences.)
TRANSCRIPTION:
The transcriptionist listens to an audio or video recording and makes a written record of the conversation. The transcript is divided into logical segments of 1–3 minutes in length. Accurate start- and end-times for each segment are included within the transcript. Additional details such as visuals and sound effects may be included in the transcript as per customer’s instructions. Transcript is then translated and/or used as subtitles.
VOICE RECORDING:
A spoken recording of the translated script is made using adult voice talent (Customer specifies gender, dialect, and age range). The service includes voice talent and voice coach, studio time and sound engineer, and post-production work. We offer you a choice between recording done by professional or non-professional voice talent. We recommend using professional voice talents and have a set of voices, who have done many previous recordings for similar projects. Oregon Translation shall provide voice samples so the Customer can select her three favorite voices.
AUDIO QUALITY ASSURANCE:
For the Post-Recording Quality Check, a native speaker of the language (different from the voice talent) listens to the audio to make sure the spoken words match the translated text, are easy to understand, and are free of errors, inadvertent pauses, or stammers.
WEB LOCALIZATION ENGINEERING:
The dual purposes are to establish a high-quality Web- ready file for the customer and to give the translation the same polished look as the original files. This usually includes integrating the translation into the original HTML or XML template and reformatting to suit the longer translated language. It may also include employing specialized tools to “lock” the program code or parsing translatable text into another format for the translation team to use, so program code is not inadvertently altered during the translation process. Localization engineering may also involve re-formatting as necessary to accommodate the longer translated text and updating keywords or navigation elements, as requested. If any graphics or captions contain text, we translate the text and rebuild the relevant layers of those images using advanced graphics software. Our Web engineers have formal training in both Web design and Web programming (esp. HTML, XML, CFM, PHP, JavaScript).
LOCALIZATION QUALITY ASSURANCE:
Oregon Translation shall provide this service after the Customer has installed the translated Web pages on its (test) server and corrected any functional errors. Oregon Translation shall write and execute project-specific test scripts. Client must be willing to contribute some of its intimate knowledge of how its custom software/user interface works and to approve the test scripts before these are executed. Quality assurance testing shall be performed by language professionals fluent in the locale’s language and culture and with near perfect fluency in English. In order to adhere to industry standards for quality, all testing is performed by separate, technical localization professionals distinct from the translators involved in earlier stages of this project. Localization QA shall cover:

correct display of non-Western fonts, character encoding, and text direction;

contextual suitability of the translation;

cultural acceptance of colors, symbols, and gestures;

synchronized timing between screen elements, display text, subtitles, and audio;

proper display, placement, and word-wrapping of translated text;

properly sized dialog boxes and buttons;

no truncated or concatenated strings;

data formatting: numerals, date, time, calendar, address, currency;

a second pass to re-check bugs reported in the issue-tracking log as a result of the first pass of testing.
NOTARIZED CERTIFICATE OF ACCURACY:
A sworn statement, signed before a notary, in which the translator attests that the translation is true and accurate to the best of his/her information, knowledge, and belief. The Client must provide the original, hardcopy document to be affixed to this certificate and the translation.
